Urgent Appeal: Flooding Aftermath of Storm Daniel in Libya

On 10 September 2023, torrential rainfall from Storm Daniel triggered the collapse of the Derna and

Mansour dams, sending floodwaters into the city of Derna below in the early hours of 11 September,

with disastrous consequences. Government officials have estimated that approximately twenty-five

percent of the city of Derna has been destroyed, with impact most felt in the areas along the banks of

the Wadi Derna. The Red Crescent of Libya has stated that at least 11,300 people have been killed. A

further 10,000 are still missing, presumed dead.

Faced with this unfathomable tragedy, survivors in the city of Derna urgently require emergency relief in

the form of temporary housing, medical supplies, clothing, food and other necessities. The National

Council on US Libya Relations (NCUSLR), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, is collecting funds for the

provision of these emergency provisions by [insert name of the local charity], a non-profit organization

on the ground in Libya, with strong local knowledge and a proven track record of reaching those

requiring urgent assistance in Libya.
