Urgent Appeal for Assistance: Flooding Aftermath of Storm Daniel in Libya

Dear Friends and Supporters of the National Council on US Libya Relations (NCUSLR),

Libya has recently been struck by a devastating natural disaster that has claimed the lives of thousands and left countless more missing.

On September 11, 2023, the city of Derna in eastern Libya was hit by a massive flood following a heavy storm and torrential rain. The catastrophic event was compounded by the collapse of dams above Derna, leading to the sweeping away of entire neighborhoods and their residents into the sea. The tragic consequences of this disaster have been profound, with authorities reporting at least 2,000 confirmed fatalities and an estimated 5,000-6,000 individuals still missing. Storm Daniel, after wreaking havoc in Greece, surged over the Mediterranean and unleashed its destructive force on Derna, as well as other cities in the Green Mountain region of East Libya.

As an organization dedicated to fostering positive relations between the United States and Libya, we cannot stand idly by in the face of this catastrophe. Libya has been grappling with political division and the erosion of public services since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising. The divisions between east and west have exacerbated the challenges facing the country. Now, in the aftermath of Storm Daniel, the people of Derna and surrounding regions are in desperate need of assistance.
