Celebrating 230 Years of US Libya Relations; Where Do We Go From Here?

Dear Friends & Partners,

We are pleased to invite you to the National Council on U.S. Libya Relations Annual Conference, to be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, in the Gold Room of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, DC.

The year 1796 marked the beginning of diplomatic engagement between the newly independent United States and the state of Tripoli and paved the way for the Treaty of Peace, which established formal relations.

Over the ensuing centuries, U.S. Libya relations have been shaped by significant political, economic, and social transformations, including Ottoman and Italian colonial rule, independence, Cold War dynamics, periods of confrontation and isolation, and more recently renewed engagement. Today, the United States is well positioned to explore opportunities for growth in its relationship with Libya, given Libya’s strategic location on the Mediterranean and in Africa, as well as its wealth of oil, gas, mineral resources, and other assets. Libya, in turn, stands to benefit from a strengthened alliance with the United States to help accelerate development across its education, health, economic, and security sectors.

The National Council on U.S. Libya Relations 8th Annual Conference, which is to be held April of this year, will commemorate this long and complex history between the two countries and explore pathways for effective cooperation on matters of national security, political and economic cooperation and on other aspects. As in past years, this conference promises to continue to be the most authoritative, comprehensive milieu of information on the current status of Libya and its relation with the U.S.

Additional details will be shared in the coming months. Please save the date.
